Hotel history Gasthof Engel Appenweier
Hospitality for over 120 years
The magnificent village linden tree in front of the house shows it from afar: This is where people met and meet. And indeed, Gasthof Engel was once the centre of the small village of Nesselried near Appenweier.
Its history goes back 150 years, and since 1898 it has been owned by the Vollmer-Lott family. When the grandparents of today's hotel manager Karl-Heinz Lott ran the Engel, it served as an inn, a corner shop, and a post office all at once. People gathered here, exchanged news, and shared joy and sorrow.
Through several renovations, Gasthof Engel has grown larger and more beautiful over time. However, it has retained its cosy atmosphere to this day, with friendly guest rooms featuring oak parquet floors, wooden panels, and lamps with carved wooden figures reminiscent of the good old days.
Depending on the season, Gasthof Engel is adorned in a pretty vine branches and grape attire. The wine from the surrounding vineyard paradise has always played an outstanding role at the Engel. Naturally, the self-distilled schnapps from the family’s own fruit has been a family tradition from the start.
Venison also holds a special significance at the Engel. Previously hunted by the Engel innkeeper Otto Vollmer himself, his son Simon continues this tradition. Thus, even today, venison comes directly from hunters in the hometown of Nesselried to the Engel kitchen, prepared with expertise and served fresh on the table.
Today, guests from all over the world appreciate Gasthof Engel at the foot of the Black Forest. At the same time, it remains, at heart, a culinary and social meeting place for the locals.
